Reverse hike in fuel and electricity tariff now, Falana tells FG

Femi Falana, a noticeable Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, called on the federal government to setback the current hike in fuel price and electricity tariff.

The chairman, Alliance for Survival of COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), also blamed the government’s claim that in the greater parts of 2020 revenue dropped.

In a report by The Nation, ASCAB in a statement by Falana clarified that the claim of revenue drop by the government filled with insufficiencies and figures that fail to show Nigeria’s economic actualities.

The group went on to list the inadequacies such as gross mismanagement of public funds, ineptitude, and gross incompetence Nigeria’s albatross.

While expressing regret that funds earmarked for the energy sector have consistently been wasted, ASCAB said the government’s plan to switch from PMS to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) should be cancelled without delay.

The minister of finance, budget, and national planning, Zainab Ahmed, had explained that the petrol subsidy was removed because of the drop in the federal government’s revenue.

Ahmed pointed out that the fuel subsidy was not sustainable because the government would not have the money to pay marketers. She said deregulation must be made to work since the government cannot afford subsidy payments.
