They received a letter via mail, terminating their employment.

The American University of Nigeria, founded by former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has sacked 406 staff in one day. This comes days after Atiku’s media outfit sacked 46 staff.

On May 1, Workers’ Day, 46 staff of Gotel Communication, a media house owned by Atiku Abubakar, fired.

However, Staff of American University of Nigeria, AUN, feared they would be next. Their worst fears became a reality yesterday, May 4. When they received a letter via mail, terminating their employment.

Meanwhile, among the disengaged employees fired without severance benefits regardless of serving the university for about 10 years.

Nonetheless, Vice President, University Relations of the establishment, Abubakar Abba Tahir, denied the allegation.

He stated, “Ask them to show you their disengagement letters.

“Till now, AUN has operated a student-staff ratio which steadiness had continued to affect the sustainability of the university

“It will not be reasonable for AUN to proceed to anchor its administrative structure on an over-bloated personnel whose role do not have important impact on the philosophy of a growth university.

“Thus, consequent upon the university’s new Governing Council vote. To restructure the institution according to its agenda for sustainability. A strategy of workforce rationalisation had been in the pipeline.

“It’s now time for the university to look back, go searching and look ahead to make sure that realistic and globally aggressive administrative practices can be achieved in structure, strategy and focus.”
