Heavy floods approaching to Lagos, others, NIHSA cautions

Heavy floods will sweep through a lot of parts of the country between September and October, a Federal Government agency alerted on Tuesday.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), gave the red alert, directed residents of flood-prone areas to commence relocation because heavy rains will precipitate the flooding steering to destruction of property and likely loss of lives.

Director-General of the agency, Mr. Clement Nze, clarified that 275 local government areas of the 774 relatively hit by the flood while 102 councils will be worse-hit.

Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Edo and Kogi are topmost of the list of states to observe major flooding.

The others are Ogun, Ekiti, Kwara, Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara states.

Each local government areas in Lagos, apart from Epe and many parts of Ogun State, will be badly affected, the agency added.

NIHASA, said governors of the states advised to begin instant emigration of residents in areas affected.

The NIHSA DG accused the construction of houses on flood plains for the heavy flooding faced in some parts of Abuja five days ago.

According to him, some lives and property lost at ”the Sunday Adewusi Estate in the Dei Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) because it was built on a flood plain.” The estate owned by the police.

Nze said what was essential earlier within the country was appropriate drainage and demolition of structures on flood plains.
