79 Prisoners on Death Row in Gombe State

No fewer than 79 prisoners proven to be on death row across the four-active custodial centres in Gombe State.

Nine women, whose crimes vary between from murder and culpable homicide, also on death row.

According to state Controller of Nigeria Correctional Service, Mohammed Indabawa, a lot is being done to guarantee “soft landing” for the men and women.

However, Naijablaze gathered that some prisoners outside the death row, especially a nursing mother, held for failing to pay N40,000 debt to her creditor.

The controller clarified that the Committee on Prerogative of Mercy had yet to decide on the fate of the 79 men and women after which they would commend way out for the governor to approve or pardon or grant them lighter sentences.

Indabawa said, “A particular woman amongst them was recently asked and she confessed to killing her husband. When asked why, she said, for long, she laboured with her husband, but when improvement came, he went to marry a second wife. When dispute erupted, she killed the new wife.”
