Cat held for smuggling drugs and SIM cards breakouts from Sri Lankan prison

A cat held at Sri Lanka’s major prison for supposedly attempting to smuggle drugs and cell phone SIM cards, absconded from custody.

At the high-security Welikada Prison, the smuggling attempt captured by the jail intelligence officials on Saturday August 1.

A police official alleged approximately 2 grams of heroin, 2 SIM cards and a memory chip acquired in a small plastic bag tied around the cat’s neck.

Aruna newspaper however reported cat absconded on Sunday August 2, from a prison room.

While there is no speedy comment from the prison agencies. Management of the correctional facility reported an upsurge in events of people throwing small packets of drugs, cell phones and phone chargers over the walls in recent weeks.

Police last week grabbed an eagle purportedly used by drug traffickers to dispense narcotics in a suburb of Colombo.

Investigations are proceeding to determine if the cat used previously to smuggle drugs and illegal imports.
